Lower Your Risk for Skin Cancer This Summer

Everyone knows that overexposure to the sun can cause skin cancer, but by following a few simple you rules can greatly reduce your risk. According to Scott B. Phillips, MD, an American Academy of Dermatology expert “Exposure of any kind does some damage to your skin.” He recommends that if you want that sunny bronzed look to use a self-tanning product. Also, after having laser treatment such as microdermabrasion and light glycolic peels, you need to stay out of direct sun for at least a week. For laser resurfacing and deep chemical peels you will need to stay indoors for two weeks and limit direct sunlight for 3 to six months.

Experts now know that not only UVB rays are bad for you, but also UVA rays are a major problem to. Like UVB, it causes premature aging and increases your risk of cancer. There is no way to measure how much UVA is absorbed by the skin, so only time will tell. It can penetrate car windows according to a report recently release by the Skin Cancer Foundation. So make sure to have sun block on for long trips in the car. When choosing a sun block make sure it protects against UVB and UVA.

According to Brian Adams, MD director of the Sports Dermatology Clinic at the University of Cincinnati, “A lotion with an SPF of 10 lets you stay in the sun 10 times longer than you normally would without burning.” So a cream of SPF 30 would allow you to stay in the sun for 300 minutes without burning. We all know someone who has been in the sun less time than 300 minutes and have gotten burned. The problem is the application of the product rather than the product itself. It takes 20 to 30 minutes for lotion to be properly absorbed into the skin, so you need to apply it 30 minutes before leaving the house. Reapply it every hour if you are doing any more than moderate exercise.

Wearing a hat in the sun can reduce exposure to ultraviolet light by 70 percent according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. They also have special clothing that is made to provide protection from the sun, including bathing suits. These are either made from tightly woven fibers or with fabric that has been treated with a chemical that blocks the sun. Companies that sell these products are Lands’ End, Nike, Reebok, The North Face and Under Armour.

There is a supplement on the market called Heliocare, which is made from natural antioxidants such as beta-carotene and extracts from a tropical fern and green tea. It has not been widely tested in the United States, but it has been available in Europe for approximately 30 years now. The pill needs to be taken at least a half an hour before sun exposure and then taken every two to three hours while your outside.
