Goal setting is an important part of accomplishing the things that mean most to us. Whether it’s getting a better job, losing those unwanted pounds, earning a higher income or starting a project, it all begins with a goal in mind. A recent question came up as to whether your success depends on whether you make your goals private or if you share them with your friends and family. A psychologist from New York University, Peter Gollwitzer and his colleagues did a number of studies to determine just that.
They asked a group of law students to participate in a study where some of them kept their goals to themselves and other shared them with the experimenter. You might be surprised to learn that those students who kept their goals private, did the hard work and exceeded in achieving them. Those in the group that made their intentions known had failed to follow through.
This is an interesting concept as we all are looking for ways to accomplish what we want in life. It seems it may be better to keep our mouths shut, heads down and work diligently towards our goals. It could just be that our success depends on it.
