Try to focus on compound movements, which targets the largest muscle groups and hits maximum muscle fibers. The best three are bench presses, dead lifts and squats. Machines are great, but if you want to really boost your muscle building, free weights that allow you to work on all different planes and against gravity will give you the quickest results.

When planning your weightlifting workouts, think about proportion. Nothing looks worse than having big chesty muscles and small chicken legs. Make sure your workout includes upper body and lower body. Also, your legs are your powerhouse muscles, so your results will be slower if you don’t exercise them and you will be more prone to injury. Add new workouts to your program as the muscles have a great memory and constantly need to be challenged.

Staying focused and persistent is key to making any workout program successful. Take your measurements every two weeks so you can chart your progress and see if your program is producing the results you want. If not, then try cycling your workouts to prevent boredom and plateaus. Also, make sure you are including three aerobic sessions a week to keep up your endurance.
