Remember some simple safety grilling tips while you are preparing for your holiday celebration.
If you are transporting food to your holiday BBQ, make sure you put cold things in coolers that will keep them at 40' degrees and try not to take food that is perishable. Plan out your menu by determining where you are going, how long of a trip it is to get there and the amount of food that you will need to take. Do not take more food than you need and make sure to keep your cooler filled with ice throughout the day. Only take out what you are going to cook at that time and leave the rest of it in the cooler for later.
Plan all your cooking needs before leaving home. The safest utensils to use are ones with long handles, so make sure to pack long handled tongs, spatulas and grilling brushes. Don't wear loose clothing or leave your grill unattended, keep in mind that are probably going to be children running around and no one wants an accident on a holiday. Keep all of your serving platters, cutting boards and plates clean and avoid cross contamination. Be sure to bring a meat thermometer so you can determine when foods are cooked to the proper temperature because nothing is worse than getting all of your friends sick. Especially on a holiday.
Most of all, good planning goes a long way in assuring that your holiday BBQ will be a total success. Happy Memorial Day everyone and here's to good eats!
