How to Cook the Perfect Rice

Cooked Rice

Rice is considered a major food staple and can be found all over the world. It is used in many countries and is paired with vegetables, legumes and small portions of fish or meat. It stores very well, which makes keeping it in your pantry easy and convenient to pull out at a moments notice. Like flour, it will attract moths if kept too long, so make sure to rotate your rice and use the oldest first. This inexpensive staple can be paired with many foods and helps to create delicious, low cost meals.

Nutritionists believe that brown rice is healthier for you than white because of the calcium and fiber content, but it is also harder for the system to digest. By paring white rice with fiber rich vegetables and legumes, you can achieve the same health benefits has brown rice. Other rice includes basmati (white and brown), Chinese black “forbidden rice”, and red rice from Bhutan.

Preparing rice can be tricky, but there are tips that will help you make the perfect rice every time.  The simplest method to cooking it is the absorption method, where the rice is cooked in a measured amount of water and when it is done it has absorbed all of the fluid. The general rule of thumb is 1 ½ to 1 ¾ cups of water per cup of rice. If you like stickier rice for stir-fries, you may need to increase the water a little. Make sure to rinse your rice several times, especially if it is imported. Over seas plants use talc to process their rice and you want to rinse any foreign substances away before cooking. Be sure to use a heavy based pot to prevent scorching and let it rest about 12 minutes after it’s done cooking to make sure all the liquid is absorbed.
