Many people suffer form insomnia for different reasons, but essential oils may bring relief to insomniacs. Essential oils are fragrant liquids that are pressed from the leaves, flowers, stems and fruits of certain plants. These oils are used for pain relief, clearing a sore throat, stopping a migraine to healing sunburned skin. Aromatherapy can trigger healing in the nervous system and brain and it can also affect our stress levels and how well we sleep. Some people can’t sleep because of a snoring partner or family member, while others have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night. Essential oils such as lavender, citrus oils, blue tansy, sandalwood and rosewood are all good for soothing and calming. Frankincense, spruce tree oils and patchouli are more robust, but just as relaxing. These oils can be applied to pillowcases, sheets, shoulders, and the neck or on the bottom of your feet before bed. Some have even found peppermint helps them get a sound night sleep.
Whether you have trouble sleeping from your own snoring or someone else’s, the heat of thyme clears the nasal passages and quiets most snoring problems. Do not put this oil on your face or neck because it may burn. Try mixing it with another natural oil, such as olive oil before applying to the body. If you do wake up in the night, applying more oil will allow you to quickly fall back asleep. These oils are available in health food stores, mystical stores and anywhere that aromatherapy products are sold. They are generally reasonable in price and have a long shelf life.
