Beating Fatigue

Many people complain of fatigue and exhaustion.  It is a common symptom and very difficult to deal with. It can be caused by a number of things, some of which are related to lifestyle and some that are related to medical problems.  This makes it difficult to diagnose and treat.

The first step is to find out what is causing the fatigue.  It could be as simple as on-the-job stress, a sleep disorder or chronic fatigue syndrome. If this is the case, simple changes like eating the right foods on a regular schedule. Sleeping well and fighting it with supplements such as ginseng or ginkgo biloba may help.

Other, more serious causes can be chronic pain, change in hormones , anemia, depression, side effects of medications, loss of muscle mass, stress, and arthritis.  Obesity, lupus, fibromyalgia, congestive heart failure, lung difficulties or chronic headaches can also be  factors.  With all of this as  possibilities,  it is easy to see why it is so difficult to diagnose and treat.  The treatment will depend on the cause and it is not straightforward because several factors may be involved.

Some easy things that the person can do themselves is to use good health habits such as eating healthy foods on a regular schedule and cutting back on caffeine and sugar. Another is to keep hydrated because dehydration may be a part of the problem. If the feeling of depression is a part of it, lighten moods with light, happy music, comedy or jokes on television or to do something that makes you laugh.
Exercise regularly, even if that is something that is not enjoyable to  you.

If these things do not stop the fatigue, it may be necessary to work with your family doctor to look deeper into the cause and find treatment.
