A Taste of Mexico

Taco Salad

The next time you want to enjoy the tastes of Mexico without all of the mounding calories you find at Mexican restaurants, try making your own healthier creations. Mexican food has many different spices that enhance the flavor of the food, while providing an authentic taste. Some common spices that are used are garlic, oregano, onion, cumin, and chili powder. Cumin has a toasty flavor with a somewhat bitter taste, which is traditional to Mexican cuisine.

Tortillas, corn, beans and salsa are all staple foods of Mexico and they can be prepared easily at home. Try stuffing tortillas with these ingredients for a healthy snack or bake them with a chili sauce for homemade enchiladas. This allows you to control your salt and fat intake by purchasing quality ingredients, rather than settling for what the restaurants has to offer. It is also a way to control portion sizes. Many Mexican restaurants serve way more than a single serving, which can cause you to over eat.

Other spices that are traditional to Mexico are cloves, cinnamon, anise and cocoa. Vegetables are very popular as well, which will only add to a healthy diet. There are many sauces to choose from and they are usually served with guacamole, chilies or salsa at every meal. Try different sauces with your family until you find something that everyone will enjoy. The next time you want Mexican food, skip the restaurant and make your own healthier and more affordable versions instead.
