With the obesity rate for children still on the rise, it’s important for parents to take an active role in the development of their children's eating habits. Setting a good example for your children will go a long ways in developing healthy habits early on. Whether you think so or not, your children are watching, so make sure they see you eating foods that you want them to eat. Equally important is the role of exercise in your child’s development. They can have the healthiest diet, but it will mean little without the added benefits of exercise. Encourage them to play outside whenever possible. It’s recommended that children get 60 minutes of physical activity everyday and what they get in school is just not enough. Vary their activities so they get aerobic exercise as well as some muscle strengthening. Limit the time spent on TV, video games, movies and computers to less than 2 hours per day.
When planning meals make sure to pay attention to portion sizes. Super sizing is not for children and they should have 2/3 of adult serving sizes. Limit junk food, such as French fries and candy and show them the good for you foods early on. Be honest and open with your kids when it comes to their diet. Explain why you want to help them cut back on calories and remain active. Be sure to clarify what it means to be healthy, so they have a good understanding of why you are trying to help them. Being honest with your children will help to create a team environment within the family and it helps when working towards goals.
