Holiday Decorating on a Budget

OrnamentsThe first thing you want to do is to make a plan or theme for your holiday decorating. It doesn’t cost anything and it will help you stay on budget. Some themes to choose from are a Toyland Christmas, countries around the world, Victorian, country, snowmen, Santa, old fashioned or the rustic lodge Christmas. Once you have a theme, the next step is to decide on a color scheme with your personal decorating style. Pick a color, a texture and a metallic and stick with it for life. Choose any color except for green, which is a Christmas Neutral. This year, lavender and light purple spark a fresh new look. Texture can be plaid, satin or velvet and choose a metallic such as silver or gold to finish the look.

Go to your attic or storage room and go through what you already have for Christmas decorations, making sure not to buy items you already have. Try to use everything you possibly can to make centerpieces and decorations before going out and buying new. Look to the outdoors for great decorating ideas like placing gold-tipped pinecones in a bowl for a classy centerpiece. For other great ideas, try hitting the kitchen and taking a clean mayonnaise jar, adding a tea light and tying ribbon around the neck for a charming Christmas candle. Placing a few glass balls in a bowl and adding sprigs of greenery or ribbon makes a beautiful addition to a bathroom or bedroom at Christmas time.

Spruce up your collectibles such as your grandmothers tea set by placing holly branches around the cups and saucers on a tray. The goal is to save money, so use everything you possibly can before hitting the thrift shops or stores. If you travel, keep Christmas in mind when picking up souvenirs. You can get a small tree and display postcards, souvenirs and ornaments to make a travel tree, which is a great conversation piece at holiday parties. Whatever theme you decide on, make sure to spread the word to all of your friends, as you will have your décor given to you for the holidays.
